“Fat” is not a Feeling…
Eating disordered individuals share a similar language. “I feel fat” “I feel disgusting” are commonly used terms. Society is to blame for the self-hatred spiraling across generations of women young and old. We live in a diet and weight obsessed culture, where much focus is placed on appearance over who we are as human beings. We too play a part since we frequently assimilate our thinking to what society dictates for us. However, there is more to feeling “fat” than most people think. Typically individuals develop eating disorders as a way to deal with relationship conflicts, pressures, anxieties, and disappointments in their lives. Eating disorders frequently occur as a way to express oneself when other attempts have failed.

Their lives are paralyzed due to the effects of eating disorders on their mental, emotional, and physical health. Since eating disorders are divisive and manipulative by nature, the negative self-talk perpetuated by them often tricks women into feeling like they are in control when in fact their lives are spiraling out of control. Often times signs and symptoms are overlooked until they become severe and life becomes unmanageable. If left untreated eating disorders can result in death. That is why it is so important to seek professional help.
